Abstract | Under greenhouse condition 2 trials were conducted to study the effect of inoculation with Frankia spp on different Casuarina spp. Native Frankia in the form of dried and powdered nodules was inoculated in trial 1 on C. equisetifolia Forster & G. Forster, and an exotic pure strain of Frankia (C(c)I3) was used as inoculum on 4 Casuarina spp in trial 2. After 180 days of transplanting, increase in the number of nodules due to inoculation with native Frankia was 8, 13, 5 and 9 times in the normal soil; in normal soil, farmyard manure and sand mixture; and in alkali soils of pH 9.0 and 9.5. Inoculation increased the dry yield of shoot by 27, 36 and 33% and dry yield of roots by 25, 33 and 50% in the normal soil and alkali soils of pH 9.0 and 9.5. When inoculated with an exotic pure strain of Frankia, different species of Casuarina, viz C. equisetifolia, C. obesa Miq., C. glauca Sieb. ex Spreng. and C. cunninghamiana Miq., showed differential behaviour at 5 pH. At pH 10.0 nodulation was completely inhibited in all the 4 species, whereas at pH 9.5 nodulation was significantly reduced. The number of nodules increased significantly on inoculation at pH 8.2, but beyond this level no uniform trend was observed. The dry weight of nodules due to inoculation was however significantly higher at pH 9.3 and 9.5 than at lower pH levels. On an average, the increase in the total N uptake/plant due to inoculation was 12% in C. obesa, 24% in C. glauca, 15% in C. cunninghamiana and 30% in C. equisetifolia. |
