Title NOTES ON THE INDUMENT OF CENTRAL-EUROPEAN ATRIPLEX SPECIES

Abstract Bladders of central European Atriplex species all show a glandlike stalk cell at the beginning of their development. Later on they mostly loose their glandular character due to elongation and division of the stalk. The elongation appears to differ from Chenopodium species. In all species the shoot tip and young leaves carry several layers of bladders containing most of the leaf's total sodium content. Formation of new trichomes is restricted to the youngest leaves in most species. but not in sect. Sclerocalymma and Obione sibirica. Besides the well known bladders occur articulated hairs (Spinnwebhaare), which densely cover the buds, and thick-walled unicellular hairs. Throughout the genus Atriplex the indument seems to be invariably fixed to these three types of trichomes.
