Abstract Atriplex cordobensis is a shrub native to semiarid regions of Cordoba (Argentina). During the critical period of fodder supply in the winter, it produces green forage which maintains satisfactory protein levels. Dormancy of its dispersal units must be overcome for germination to occur. This paper examines the causes dormancy in this species, methods for breaking it, and optimal laboratory germination conditions. Results indicate that in A. cordobensis the mechanisms responsible for dormancy are located in the bracts and are associated with the presence of mechanical barriers. ABA levels in bracts appear not to be involved in the dormancy mechanism, in contrast to what has been postulated by other authors. Our results suggest that physical scarification is more effective than chemical treatments for breaking dormancy. Optimal temperatures for germination ranged between 24-degrees-C and 28-degrees-C and germination was enhanced by combining alternating temperatures with light/dark cycles. The viability of seeds decreased during storage.
