Title ATRIPLEX-HALIMUS L. SOME GERMINATION FEATURES IN RELATION TO THE SEED POLYMORPHISM AND TO THE MEDIUM SALINITY

Abstract The Atriplex halimus L. seeds vary in colour, shape and mostly in size. This polymorphism is correlated with a different germination rate. The tests carried out with sea water and tap water in various concentrations showed that germination was initially affected by sea water. After a certain period (9 days for the "naked" seeds and 12 days for the "false fruits"), in solutions containing up to 33% sea water, the result was a germination percentage of the naked seeds nearly the same as the controls and a greater germination percentage of the "false fruits". When sea water was 50%, naked seeds germination percentage was lower, but reached at the 18th day 61,5% which is a remarkable value. The "false fruits", at the 20th day, in the same conditions, germinated in a percentage even slightly higher than the controls. The tests performed with the "false fruits" of A. halimus showed that the small NaCl crystals on the bracteoles hinder but don't inhibit germination. In nature this delay would have the ecological significance of preventing germination until the most opportune moment for the plant development: a type of dormancy linked to a part of the flower and not to the seed.
