Abstract The revision was carried out by conventional methods supported by field studies, REM studies of seeds, and chromosome counts. It resulted in the recognition of two Suaeda-species for Austria, viz S. pannonica (BECK) GRAEBN. and S. prostrata PALL., both restricted to a rather small area with saline soils in Burgenland, SE of Vienna. In almost all more recent floras of the Pannonian area, the two species were named erroneously: S. pannonica was named predominantly S. maritima subsp. salsa, but also subsp. prostrata and S. corniculata; S. prostrata was given the name S. pannonica. The two species are described with regard to morphology, ecology, phytocenology and distribution, both historical and actual. The strong decline in area and frequency is stressed, together with aspects of conservation. The same species also occur in neighboring countries within the Pannonian flora district. From the E border of the Hungarian plain onwards they are replaced by another taxon belonging to the S. maritima-group, and in Hungary S. altissima (L.) DUM. occurs very scattered and on ruderal sites only.
