Abstract | Germination ecology of the expansive species Puccinellia distans from ruderal habitat and endangered species P. limosa from salt marsh was studied. Response of germination to dry storage, temperature and NaCl salinity was tested in laboratory experiments. Total germination percentage as well as an index of germination velocity was used for statistical analysis. Both species were dormant immediately after harvest and after- ripened during a dry storage. The influence of dry storage on germination was highest in fluctuating temperature of 30/10degreesC. The fresh harvest seeds of P. distans germinated better under constant temperature of 15degreesC than those of P. limosa, which germinated better under fluctuating temperatures. After three month of dry storage, the best germination of both species was in fluctuating temperatures. The results of the constant temperatures were worse, but the great exception was the constant temperature of 15degreesC. P. limosa germinated better than P. distans in fluctuating temperatures with low night temperatures (1degreesC) and it generally, was tolerant to the broader temperature spectrum. Both species responded in a similar manner to increasing NaCl salinity stress with reductions in both total germination percentage and index of germination velocity. Germination of P. limosa was enhanced by low salinity concentrations up to 0.5% NaCl, and the tolerance to NaCl salinity was higher than that of P. distans. Notes of germination ecology of the studied species with comments on their life strategies are documented. |
