Abstract Lipid and carbohydrates in the propagules of ten mangrove species of China have been investigated. Despite smaller amounts of crude fat (mostly less than 6%), 14 kinds of constituent fatty acids were identified. Fatty acids were characterized by greater amounts of caprylic (20-80%) and tetracosanoic (10-30%) acids, and total amounts of greatly unsaturated fatty acids (mostly 20-30%). Six kinds of sugars were found in these propagules. The results also showed larger amounts of reducing sugars (more than 5%) in Sonneratia ovata Backer, Avicennia marina (Forsk.) Vierh., and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza (L.) Lamk., of total sugars (12%) in S. ovata, Sonneratia caseolaris (L.) Engl. and A. marina, and of pectin (about 3%), ester methoxyl contents (6-7%) and galacturonic acid (66% and 80%) of pectin in S. ovata and S. caseolaris. All of the above-listed plants are expected to be promising resources for sugars and pectin.
