Job description

We are looking for two exceptional early career researchers to assist in the completion of the Wellcome Trust funded Ethical Preparedness in Genomic Medicine project, a Collaborative Award held in conjunction with Prof Anneke Lucassen’s team at Oxford University. The Brighton arm of the project has developed novel methodologies for collecting patient stories about genomic medicine to inform health care professionals about the everyday experience of patients and families to in turn promote and improve ethical preparedness.

We are now looking for individuals to help us ensure the project creates important legacies of clear conceptual thinking, innovative forms of interdisciplinary scholarly outputs, and the dissemination of project findings beyond academic circles.

Candidates would require a strong command of relevant disciplinary and interdisciplinary scholarship relating to bioethics and genomics and/or the lived experience of health and illness (particularly, rare disease). Confidence and aptitude in engaging with participatory arts-health approaches and creative methods, and experience of analysing and presenting qualitative data would be highly valued. We would particularly welcome candidates with experience of developing novel forms of communication and public and stakeholder engagement.

We are looking for individuals with the confidence and ability to work collaboratively to develop outputs based on existing project data. However, we would also be keen to support successful candidates in developing future independent research plans which would align with the research culture and strategy of the BSMS Ethics Team.

Applicants will need to identify strongly with the values of the project which commit us to giving due attention to lived experience in order to inform health care policy and clinical practice going forward.

Please contact Professor Bobbie Farsides b.farsides@bsms.ac.uk or Dr Rich Gorman r.gorman@bsms.ac.uk for informal enquiries.

The University is committed to equality and valuing diversity, and applications are particularly welcomed from women and black and minority ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in academic posts in Science, Technology, Engineering, Medicine and Mathematics (STEMM) at Sussex.
