Applications are invited for a Research Fellow in scaling a trapped ion quantum computer in the Ion Quantum Technology group in the Sussex Centre for Quantum Technologies at the University of Sussex. The group is part of the UK National Quantum Technologies programme and the European Quantum Technologies Flagship programme.
Trapped ions are one of the most mature implementations to deliver practical quantum technologies. Recently we have developed a blueprint for the construction of a large-scale trapped ion quantum computer. More details can be found here.
This architecture is based on a modular approach where connectivity between microfabricated modules is achieved via electric fields, removing the need for photonic interconnects. Quantum logic is implemented on the modules using locally applied voltages and globally applied microwave radiation.
This removes the need for millions of carefully aligned laser beams in a quantum computer capable of solving some of the most computationally challenging problems.
The successful applicant will actively drive the construction of a quantum computer demonstrator device which is currently being developed in the group. The demonstrator will implement the core principles of the blueprint. This includes connecting modules via electric fields and operating modules with integrated control electronics to implement quantum algorithms.
Some of the typical tasks for this position include operation of high power microwave setups, laser systems, optical setups and ultra-high vacuum setups as well as carrying out quantum information science experiments and perform simulations of quantum systems.
The successful applicant should have an experimental PhD in a field related to our research area such as atomic physics, optical physics or quantum physics along with a good publication record.
The successful candidate is expected to actively engage in our research program, provide guidance to undergraduate and postgraduate students and to participate in the strategic planning of the group. The salary offered will be appropriate to the qualifications, standing and experience of the successful candidate.
