Job description

The University of Sussex is looking to appoint a Project Director to head its exciting Life Sciences project.

There are 3 key elements to this role. Firstly, you will lead the masterplanning and visioning for the project, working through the options to develop a compelling options appraisal and feasibility for Life Sciences Research at Sussex.

This project is complex, and as the Project Director, you will need to set and maintain the tone and direction for a number of specialist work stream leads who are shaping and defining what School’s future means to them.

As well as leading the vision development  for the project, you will work with internal and external specialists and stakeholders, as well as the project team, and colleagues delivering the infrastructure and maintenance, to oversee the successful implementation of these work steams.

Secondly, and fundamentally, this role is about managing excellent relationships. This is a high profile project will attract a lot of attention and strong opinions from internal stakeholder. As the Project Director, it will be your role to be the ‘voice’ of the project, to listen and empathise with differing opinions, challenging and influencing where necessary, and represent the voice of our audiences and supporters at all times.

You will need to inspire confidence that the decisions made for the University and the School’s development are the right ones. And to do this, you will need to take a long-term perspective, planning and thinking ahead to identify opportunities and mitigate risks before they arise.

And thirdly, this is a complex multi-million pound project and will be positioned within a wider programme of work to deliver the emerging ambitions of the new Sussex 2025 Strategy. You will be managing multiple interfaces and ensuring the project parameters are clearly defined and agreed, and budgets and finances are effectively managed.
