Job description

 The University of Sussex is looking to recruit a Media Relations Manager with a focus on youth media on a fixed term basis for three years to enhance its profile and reputation among teenagers and young adults.

 The postholder will work across the University’s academic Schools, central services and student groups to identify creative new ways to tell the University’s student experience stories. The role sits within the University’s Communications & External Affairs division. 

 The Media Relations Manager will be responsible for building awareness and enhancing the reputation of the University by proactively promoting its work, people and values.

 A major part of the role will be researching, creating and placing stories and other content that promotes the University in key youth-facing media outlets and with digital opinion formers.

 There is a requirement to translate sometimes complex information into a compelling narrative that has relevance to a youth audience. 

 Strong written and verbal communications skills are vital, as are existing relationships with key media and influencers. 

 The post-holder will also be required to work with communications colleagues on institutional stories to support the University’s strategic objectives.

 A key element of the role will be to identify opportunities to develop stories across social media platforms, using a variety of communications tactics, including photography, video and audio clips, blogs, infographics and podcasts, to reach youth audiences.

 The post holder will be required to write annual and project public relations plans that demonstrate a sustained approach to promoting University activities.

 The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic, self-motivated media professional with a strong eye for a story and an energetic approach to working with bloggers, vloggers and other non-traditional media. 

 Some out of office and weekend working may be necessary.
