Job description

This vacancy is only open to those currently employed by the University. 

The University seeks to appoint a Head of School for the School of Global Studies. The School covers disciplines in Anthropology, International Relations, International Development and Geography. The School is committed to excellence in teaching and is engaged in research; producing influential, world-leading reports which address the most pressing issues of our times – global inequalities and global justice, climate and environmental change, war and peace, global health and finance crises, intolerance and discrimination.  

Reporting to the Deputy Vice Chancellor and Provost, the position of Head of the School of Global Studies is an exciting opportunity to lead the next phase of development at this important chapter in Sussex’s evolution. The appointee will be an individual of exceptional quality and ability, with strong influencing and engagement skills. They should also have an established and active international research profile and a track record of innovation and excellence in teaching. The post requires vision and imagination, an acuity for strategy as well as operational effectiveness, an enthusiasm for delivery, and outstanding leadership and management skills. 

The Head of School will work closely with the Heads of Department, other Heads of School and individual academics as well as administrative and support staff. The appointed individual will be responsible for all members of academic and tutoring staff within the School. They will also establish and maintain an effective relationship with the Head of Professional Service.  

With an inclusive management style and the ability to foster partnerships, build relationships and work collaboratively across boundaries, the new Head of School will play a significant role in the onwards journey of both the School and the University.
