The University of Sussex has challenged convention since its foundation in 1961. It has a long tradition of experimentation and innovation that has made a real difference to the lives of its students, and those who benefit from its research and wider endeavours.

The Sussex 2025 strategy sees the University building on these achievements and making an even greater contribution to building a better world. Situated on the edge of vibrant Brighton & Hove, the University is home to 18,000 students who are based on one of Britain’s most beautiful campus locations.

The University seeks to appoint a Head of School for the School of Engineering and Informatics. The School covers the disciplines of engineering, product design and informatics. The School is committed to excellence in teaching and is engaged in cutting-edge and truly interdisciplinary research.

Reporting to the Provost, the position of Head of the School of Engineering and Informatics is an exciting opportunity to lead the next phase of development at this important chapter in Sussex’s evolution. The appointee will be an individual of exceptional quality and ability, with strong influencing and engagement skills. They should also have an established and active international research profile and a track record of innovation and excellence in teaching. The post requires vision and imagination, an acuity for strategy as well as operational effectiveness, an enthusiasm for delivery, and outstanding leadership and management skills.

The Head of School will work closely with the Heads of Department, other Heads of School and individual academics as well as administrative and support staff. The appointed individual will be responsible for all members of academic and tutoring staff within the School. They will establish and maintain an effective relationship with the appropriate Head of Professional Service.

With an inclusive management style and the ability to foster partnerships, build relationships and work collaboratively across boundaries, the new Head of School will play a significant role in the onwards journey of both the School and the University.
