Job description

We are seeking to appoint a new Head of Widening Participation to provide leadership of Outreach and Access focussed widening participation activity.  The successful applicant will have a high level of policy acumen and have experience at operating at a senior level, working with Pro-Vice-Chancellors and Professional Service Directors to deliver on Outreach and Access focussed widening participation policy objectives. 

The candidate will have a detailed knowledge of the OfS regulatory environment and before that, the requirements sought by OFFA, and will be an experienced widening participation practitioner, able to demonstrate a track record of delivery.  The successful candidate will assist in leading the implementation of the University’s Access and Participation Plan for 2020-21, monitoring that delivery and reviewing the effectiveness of our OfS funded activity previous cycles.

Working closely with the Director of Student Recruitment, Admissions and International Development and the University’s Access, Success and Progress Group, the post-holder will take responsibility for the management, delivery, evaluation and reporting of University WP activity and in particular the Access strand of our work.  The successful applicant will therefore have significant experience of developing and delivering widening participation policy within a Higher Education setting and will be able to demonstrate clear outcomes.  The post-holder will be expected to lead on implementation of a new delivery model of partnership working with schools and colleges and deliver our new strategy as set out in our Access and Participation Plan for 2025.  Additionally, the post-holder will work to ensure our new look pre-entry programme is appropriately branded, communicated and implemented.

The candidate will combine experience in widening participation with a track record in leadership, exhibiting demonstrable experience of delivery of effective schools and colleges interventions, activity aimed at raising aspirations and targeted delivery interventions that focus on specific student cohorts including, but not exclusively: POLAR4 Q1, IMDQ1, BAME students and Care Leavers. The post-holder will support the Director of Student Recruitment, Admissions and International Development and PVC Education and Students to manage effective implementation of our Access and Participation Plan and report on the efficacy of this work through the Access, Success and Progress Group to the University Executive.  The candidate will be a key member of the Division of Student Recruitment leadership team.

Applicants will need a willingness to travel within the UK and work anti-social hours on occasion.  An up to date understanding of the secondary education curriculum, qualification developments and syllabi are essential.  The successful applicant will need tact, diplomacy and excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively.  An enhanced DBS check and driving license are required for this post.
