Salary: starting at £51,034 and rising to £66,537 per annum, pay dependent on experience

The University of Sussex has set out a bold and ambitious strategy to revitalise its IT services and Digital environment. To help us achieve this, we are seeking a talented technical leader to drive the revitalisation of the Research IT Support team.
We are a community of ~18,000 students and over 2,100 staff, of whom about half are academic. Over 75% of research activity at Sussex is categorised as world leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*) in terms of originality, significance and rigour. Our beautiful green campus is situated on the edges of the South Downs National Park and within easy reach of the vibrant city of Brighton and Hove.
Building on the University’s radical heritage and as part of our Sussex 2025 Strategic Framework, IT Services is developing a roadmap for investment across its service portfolio, embracing new technologies and fostering a culture of innovation. Working with the Deputy Director the Head of Research IT and Support will be responsible for leading the strategic development and operation of a suite of specialist technology and expert services that support the University’s multidisciplinary research mission. Particular areas of focus will include appropriate exploitation of Cloud platforms and the establishment of a Research Software Engineering (RSE) capability.
As well as providing the management and leadership to ensure successful day-to-day operations and excellence in service delivery, the Head of Research IT and Support will be highly visible outside IT Services. The ability to forge relationships with researchers, engage with colleagues from peer Professional Services departments and foster collaborations with other research institutions will be key.
The successful candidate will demonstrate a ‘can do’ approach, leadership and entrepreneurial flair as well as specialist knowledge of the key challenges and opportunities in the research IT and technology domain.
