The Head of Business Engagement will be a dynamic, confident and capable individual with the significant leadership experience needed to develop this diverse and growing area of the University’s activities. You will have the wide range of skills, experience and creativity needed to deliver in this demanding and complex business facing role and will focus on developing a high-quality and consistent commercial offering.

This post is a new senior leadership role within Research & Enterprise Services with the specific responsibility of providing strategic and operational management to implement the University’s Business Engagement Strategy.  The post holder will ensure that business engagement activities are coordinated across the University to support the delivery of our Strategic Framework and supporting strategies.

The role will provide leadership to Professional Services staff based centrally, and oversight and co-ordination of faculty-based staff and staff embedded within other Professional Services units. The purpose of the post is to oversee the growth and integration of the University’s broad offering to business and developing approaches which respond to the opportunities of national and regional growth strategies. They will support University ambitions to:

  • Significantly improve University’s engagement with business and regional development partners.
  • Ensure our interactions with business supports the University’s research aspirations.
  • Our business engagement strategy makes a significant contribution to the University’s Employability Strategy and supports students to enter positive graduate destinations.
  • To play a significant role in the economic prosperity of Brighton and Hove, and Sussex.
  • Develop a greater knowledge, and promote and embed an effective culture, of innovation and knowledge exchange across Sussex.
  • Contribute to the financial sustainability of the institution.

The postholder will have a wide variety of relationships, both internally and externally, to support the delivery of the University’s aspirations in relation to business engagement. They will work closely with academic colleagues and Professional Service teams to maximise business engagement opportunities and increase income from commercial sources.

The Head of Business Engagement will be responsible for business development and partnership strategies and overseeing a number of strategic investments to enhance the University’s business engagement capabilities.

You will demonstrate in-depth understanding of the UK funding landscape and the ability to develop strategies to ensure the university is well placed to respond to external change. A key feature will be extensive experience of leading and successfully delivering projects and managing complex external funding applications.

The role would suit a pro-active and experienced professional who has a strong track-record in leading and managing in a UK University environment.  Given the uncertainties of the environment (e.g. with the establishment of UKRI and the Industrial Strategy), a resilient and agile approach will be required.

The post holder will be required to demonstrate significant negotiation skills and expertise in developing productive relationships, representing the University to commercial partners and regional business growth agencies (e.g. Brighton Chambers of Commerce, Gatwick Diamond Initiative, Wired Sussex and the Local Economic Partnership).
