Job description

The University of Sussex has challenged convention since its foundation in 1961. From the campus’ modernist architecture on the edge of a rural national park, to our progressive academics and creative professional services staff, to the inspiring students who choose to learn and live here, to the very tone of the institution and the nature of its conversations, through to the expressions of radicalism, critical thinking and, at times, dissent.

The University of Sussex has a long tradition of experimentation and innovation that has made a real difference to the lives of many students, and those who benefit from our research and wider endeavours. Our research creates new agendas, contributes new knowledge and provides new ideas and solutions that are helping to shape the world. We challenge conventional thinking and discourses, offering inspiring and creative ways to understand and solve global issues.

The University is looking to recruit a Director of Communications, Marketing and Advancement. This is a newly created role and the incoming Director will be responsible for bringing these functions together and cementing a unified brand proposition for the University. Sussex is seeking an exceptional individual with significant experience in strategic and high-level operational marketing and communications leadership.

This is an exciting and challenging role, covering a broad span of external relations, including student recruitment, digital and marketing, internal communications, fundraising, media relations, widening participation, public affairs, global engagement and the Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts (ACCA). Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer and working closely with the Vice-Chancellor and Provost, you will build affinity for the University among a wide range of audiences.

As Director, you will lead on the development of the University’s public positioning and profile, engaging and influencing audiences locally, nationally and internationally, promoting our key messages and the institutional narrative, whilst ensuring the university brand is globally recognised and embedded consistently across the institution.

You will be an experienced, intellectually strong, senior level communicator and marketing leader. You will have the drive and determination to secure high levels of international exposure for the University, enhancing the University’s reputation and ensuring it stands out in the sector. A key member of the University’s Professional Services Leadership Team, you will be the internal champion for external relations, and will bring significant experience of leading marketing, communications, student recruitment or development functions in a large and complex organisation.

The University of Sussex values the diversity of its staff and students and we welcome applicants from all backgrounds. The University of Sussex is committed to equality of opportunity.
