A key role will be promoting both how strategic decisions are made and success is fostered at Sussex, as well as ensuring the highest possible standards of governance around those decisions.

The Deputy Head of Governance Services will be responsible for the provision of a suite of high quality secretariat services, supporting the governance of the University by its executive team. In particular, the Deputy Head of Governance Services will be responsible for the provision of support initially to: UEG and Senate; and for overseeing support from within wider team for the University Leadership Team (ULT); the Professional Services Leadership Team (PSLT); a portfolio of Heads of Schools leadership meetings; and UEG’s relationship with the Professoriate and the Students’ Union. Additionally the post holder will support the Head of Governance Services with the provision of secretariat services to the Council level Committee structure and related activities, as well as deputising for the Head of Governance Services as required.

The individual will require exceptional organisation and business delivery skills, as well as the personal resilience to manage a demanding and fast paced role. Along with the Head of Governance Services s/he will be expected to support the Vice-Chancellor (VC), the Provost and the Chief Operating Officer (COO) in their roles by co-ordinating and managing the flow of information from across the organisation to UEG, and then ensuring decisions and actions taken at UEG are cascaded and taken forward by the appropriate divisions or fora.

The individual will work closely with the Head of Governance Services, who is responsible for the provision of high quality secretariat services to Council and its Committees and Sub-committees. Together you will ensure coordination and a seamless exchange of information across the governance structure of the University, as well as ensuring that required actions are appropriately allocated and executed on time.

This Deputy Head of Governance Services role will include responsibility for drafting papers on behalf of the VC, Provost and COO, providing briefing notes for meetings and speaking engagements.

In addition, the individual will have line management responsibility for the Vice-Chancellor’s PA, who in turn line manages the Executive Assistants to the Provost and COO.
