Job description

The University of Sussex is a leading research-intensive University near Brighton. We have both an international and local outlook, with staff and students from more than 100 countries and frequent engagement in community activities and services.

As Deputy Director of Human Resources you will be responsible for leading the HR Business Services Team (comprising business services, administration, recruitment and business partnering and the International HR team).  You will also lead the HR Transformation Programme to enable the team to fully exploit digital HR and establish itself as a centre of customer excellence.

You will play a key role in the Human Resources Leadership Team, supporting the Human Resources Director in the development and delivery of the University’s People Strategy in response to the roll out of the University’s Strategic Framework, Sussex 2025, ‘A Better University for a Better World’. The University has, as a priority, a commitment to deliver an outstanding student experience and HR plays its role by aligning our policies and practices to support this key strategic aim.

As a Senior HR leader and professional, you will act as a role model and will deputise for the Director of HR, where and when appropriate, across the full range of duties. 

To be successful in this role you will have: senior level experience to deliver in the main areas of expertise as outlined in the job description; proven experience of establishing credibility and authority with senior colleagues and external stakeholders and strong leadership and management skills. In addition, you will have significant experience of successfully leading a high performing Human Resources function within a complex organisation where efficiency, high quality customer service and excellent performance are paramount, with people at the heart of organisational success.
