Albion Chair opens new scanner suite to bring research and care “into the premiership”
The Chairman of Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club, Tony Bloom, has officially opened a new scanning facility on the University of Sussex campus, which will mean exciting new opportunities for research and treatment.
The new 3T MRI scanner, which weighs 13 ton and has an 11.4 ton magnet, was winched by crane into the Clinical Imaging Sciences Centre (CISC) at Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) in June, and the scanner was officially launched yesterday (Thursday 26 October) .
The new state-of-the-art Siemens scanner will provide new research and educational possibilities, particularly in the field of neuroscience, along with expanded clinical scanning options for patients.
Tony Bloom said: “The new scanner will give a real boost to the local community, in terms of both state-of-the-art research that will lead to new developments in healthcare, and providing valuable services to local patients.”
Professor Mara Cercignani, Academic Director of CISC, said: “Our new MRI facility will allow researchers at the medical school, along with our colleagues at the University of Sussex and the University of Brighton, to further develop our ground-breaking research, truly bringing it into the ‘premiership’.
“Not only that, but we will now be able to scan local patients for a wider range of conditions such as prostate cancer.”
The event was also attended by representatives from the University of Sussex including the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Saul Becker, and Professor Michael Davies, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research).
Alongside cutting-edge research and teaching, CISC delivers diagnostic imaging services to NHS patients from Brighton and Sussex using MRI and PET-CT.
CISC is part of BSMS (a partnership between the Universities of Sussex and Brighton and the local NHS health community), and has strong links with the School of Psychology and the School of Engineering and Informatics at the University of Sussex.
It facilitates research in areas as diverse as addiction, emotion, consciousness, psychophysiological mechanisms, neurological disorders, cognitive and social performance, inflammatory disorders, cancer, dementia and Alzheimer's disease.
One of the areas of particular strength at CISC is imaging neuroscience, in close collaboration with other members of Sussex Neuroscience.
CISC faculty also work closely with colleagues from the Sackler Centre for Consciousness Science at Sussex, which seeks to unravel the complex neural networks underpinning conscious experience in health and disease.
