Alternative car parking available for registered drivers

Does the certainty of a guaranteed parking space appeal to you when you drive to work or lectures? If so, you may be interested in taking advantage of new temporary parking for Sussex staff and students.

The nine car parks on campus are open to all registered drivers on a "first come, first to occupy" basis. Now, as the programme of campus development continues, guaranteed spaces are being offered in a site just across the A27.

From the start of the spring term on Monday (30 January), 150 drivers will be able to park in Brighton & Hove Albion FC’s Bridge car park, near to the Amex football stadium and just 15 minutes’ walk from campus.

This alternative provision replaces the spaces in the Mantell car park (P6), which closed in December 2016 to make way for the new East Slope development of student residences. Additional spaces in the Bridge car park may be released at a future date.

Charles Dudley, Director of Residential & Campus Services, explains: “As each construction project progresses, the overall number of car parking spaces will be maintained at the existing levels.”

To take advantage of this opportunity of a guaranteed parking space, you will need to have a current, valid 12-month parking permit or a pass to park (which allows you to park on a daily basis by purchasing scratch cards).

There will be no extra charge; all you will need to do is to swap your existing permit or pass for a special voucher, entitling you to park in the Bridge car park. If you use scratch cards, you will continue to buy these on campus.

Vehicle access to and exit from the car park (which is off the A27, opposite Stanmer Park) is via a small tunnel under the railway line.

The B&HAFC stewards managing the Bridge car park every weekday will make sure that spaces are kept free only for you and the other drivers with a voucher.

The floodlit car park is monitored by B&HAFC’s CCTV network, which also covers the walkway from the Bridge car park alongside the railway to the footbridge over the track by Falmer station.

Note that your voucher will not apply on the few days when the football club have weekday matches: these are currently scheduled for Tuesday 14 February, Tuesday 28 February, Tuesday 4 April and Monday 17 April (Easter Monday).

And do bear in mind that your voucher will be valid in the nine campus car parks only during evenings (6pm to 12 midnight) and at weekends, when the Bridge car park is not open.

To swap your existing permit or pass for a voucher to park at the Bridge car park, please go to the Service Centre in the Hastings building.

If you don’t wish to take advantage of the new temporary car parking and you are having difficulty in finding a free space on campus, you may wish to consider using the car park adjacent to Lewes Court (P9), which usually has spaces.
