Finding help at night and at the weekend: on campus

You can get support from trained staff on campus even if it is in the middle of the night and even if you do not wish the Police to get involved.

  • Residential Advisor/ Senior Residential Advisor in your flat/residence
  • The Security team is available 24 hrs. a day at York House 01273 873333 (3333 from an internal phone)
  • Residential Support Team – one of whom will be available 24 hours a day on campus, can provide expert information and support. At night and at the weekend, this team can be reached through Security or through a Residential Advisor. Both Residential Advisors and the Security team will contact the Residential Support Team to support you.
  • The Saturn Centre (Sexual Assault Referral Centre) at Crawley Hospital  The Saturn Centre, Crawley Hospital, West Green Drive, Crawley, West Sussex RH11 7DH. You will need to phone 0330 223 0058 for advice from the on-call team.
  • Police – If you decide to make a report to the Police, you,or (if you prefer), any of the contacts above can call them on 999(emergency) or 101(non-emergency) for you. You can access the services of the Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) through the Police, but cannot self-refer at night and at the weekends.

Finding help at night and at the weekend: off campus

In university managed accommodation:

  • Residential Advisor/ Senior Residential Advisor in your flat/residence
  • Porter
  • Residential Support Team –  If you are in university accommodation there will be a porter or Residential Advisor who can contact the University’s Residential Support Team to provide expert information and support with or without Police involvement.

Finding help during week day office hours (Monday – Friday 9am – 5pm)

Whether you live on or off campus, you can get expert support and information at either the Student Life Centre  01273 87 6767 or the University Counselling Service  01273 678156. The staff here are trained to deal with incidents of Sexual violence – it is best to phone in advance for a priority appointment.

  • Police – If you decide to make a report to the Police you, or (if you prefer), any of the contacts above can call them on 999(emergency) or 101(non- emergency) for you.
  • Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) – You can self-refer here during week day office hours for specialist medical and emotional help, forensics and referral to counselling. The nearest is The Saturn Centre, Crawley Hospital, West Green Drive, Crawley, West Sussex RH11 7DH. You will need to phone 01293 600469 to make an appointment.
  • Survivors’ Network. Representatives of Rape Crisis in Brighton & Hove. Drop-in: 7-9pm Thursdays, ring 01273 203380 for the location. For access to an ISVA ( Independent Sexual Violence Advisor) either phone or email referrals@survivorsnetwork.org.uk
  • SOLAR Clinit @ SHAC East (formerly Claude Nicol Centre): SOLAR @ SHAC East (formerly The Claude Nicol) offers a confidential, non-judgemental service dedicated to men and women who have experienced sexual assault both recently and historically. The Solar Clinic offers booked appointments on Tuesday mornings from 09.30 offering support, advice, STI testing and medical treatment as necessary. Individuals are welcome to attend SHAC services for support at other times of the week if Tuesday mornings are not convenient. Those who disclose sexual assault are fast tracked through the clinic and are treated with respect and dignity.
