Wellbeing Week 2020

Sussex Wellbeing Week will take place from the 2nd-6th March 2020. The week is a partnership between the University and Students' Union and designed to raise awareness of wellbeing issues, empower you to look after your own wellbeing, and give you vital information about where to find advice and support. All Wellbeing Week events are free, unless advertised.

Monday 2nd March 

12.30-2.30pm - Wellbeing Fair - Meeting House

Come along to the Wellbeing Fair and get involved in:

  • free massage taster sessions (just drop-in)
  • delicious FREE LUNCH from SussexFood
  • activities and games
  • Tea and Talk corner
  • meet and greet with local and on-campus health and wellbeing services

You'll be able to browse stalls and chat with staff/volunteers from the following organisations and groups:

1.00-1.30pm - Mindfulness - Meeting House

Mindfulness is a simple form of guided meditation which helps you become more aware of the present moment. Though it has roots in Buddhist meditation, mindfulness is all inclusive and not tied in to any religion. Mindfulness can help us stand back from our thoughts and learn to recognise when they are taking over. Because of this, it’s recommended by medical professionals as a way to improve mental health. No need to book - just come along!

3.00-4.00pm - Tai Chi - Sport Centre Dance Studio

Relax your mind and strengthen your body with this powerful martial art. Designed for beginners, this gentle class is open to all and will focus on:

  • relieving stress through moving meditation
  • strengthening muscles and joints
  • alleviating back pain
  • gently activating stagnant energy.

You don't need a sports membership or any experience to attend this session, which will be fun and encouraging in supportive settings. Book your place for £1 using the online shop

5.30-7.30pm - REDS Healthy Relationships Workshop - Fulton 114

The REDS Healthy Relationships workshop has been developed in partnership with Sussex students and will be delivered by postgraduate student trainers who already have experience in this area. During the two-hour session you'll think about different types of relationships including romantic relationships, sexual relationships and friendships. It’s designed to be interactive, engaging and to promote discussion and learning between students. Find out more and book your place.

 

Tuesday 3rd March 

11.00am-3.30pm - Clothes Swap & Upcycling - Mandela Hall, Falmer House

Bring along any clothes / shoes / accessories you no longer wear and swap each item for something new! Save money. Share fashion. Save the planet. 

If you have nothing to swap, you can purchase items with cash. There is a £1 entry fee for this event. Find out more.

12.00-1.00pm - Essay Writing: Top Tips (for undergraduates) - Careers and Employability Centre, Library

Do you find it hard to get started on your essay? Do you struggle with critical analysis, referencing or being concise? In this session we will share ideas to help you focus on your writing and improve the quality of your work. Find out more and book your place.

In this workshop we look at mindset around success and failure and how we can choose thoughts, feeling and actions that benefit us most. With creative, fun and thoughtful activities, we explore our thoughts and self-image to deepen understanding of how we can develop resilience to failure. The workshop offers practical skills for everyday life and supports wellbeing. No need to book - just come along!

6.00-7.30pm - Wellbeing-themed Language Cafe - Dine Central, Bramber House

Come along to learn an array of languages, ranging from Spanish and French to Arabic and Russian. Learn phrases to do with health and wellbeing. Meet like-minded people, make friends and network! Find out moreNo need to book - just come along!

7.00-11.00pm - USSU & LGBTQ+ Soc Presents: Sober Silent Disco - Room 76, Falmer House

As part of Wellbeing Week, USSU is hosting its first ever Sober Silent Disco with LGBTQ+ Soc!' This free event is to provide a fun space for those who might not fancy drinking. A range of soft drinks and snacks will be available. Whilst alcohol will be available in the front bar, we respectfully ask that Room 76 is kept sober for the evening. Register for your free ticket to guarantee a space.

 

Wednesday 4th March 

11.00am-12.00pm - Woof Wednesday - Debating Chamber, Falmer House

Do you need to de-stress, fancy a chat, or just love pets? Drop in for five minutes or take an hour to relax with our four-legged friends! Free tea and coffee and cakes will be provided by the Buddy Scheme. All staff and students from across campus welcome! Find out moreNo need to book - just come along!

1.00-2.00pm - X-Card Sexual Health Drop-in - Student Life Centre, Bramber House 

Come to an X-Card drop-in and register for an X-Card - then use it to pick up free condoms on campus. Drop-ins are free, confidential and run by trained student volunteers. Find out moreNo need to book - just come along!

1.00-3.00pm - Tea and Talk - Meeting House 

Tea and Talk sessions are a work-free zone and an informal space for Sussex students to come and relax.  It’s a space where you can talk to someone, be listened to, and find out about other sources of support, as well as enjoying free tea and biscuits! There are also games and crafts to try. Trained student volunteers run the drop-in for two hours on a Wednesday afternoon, and are on hand to talk about everything to do with student life, if you want to. Find out moreNo need to book - just come along!

2.00-4.00pm - Plant Pot decorating with Craft Soc -  Location TBC (check Facebook event for updates)

Come along and decorate some mini plant pots with Craft Soc. All the materials you need will be provided, including your very own tiny succulent! You will go home with your painted plant pot and potted plant.

The session is free for those who have bought a Spring term membership of Craft Soc, or £4 for non-members. Everyone welcome no matter your crafting ability.

3.00-3.30pm - Gentle Run on campus - Sport Centre

Join our supportive and encouraging Active US student activator, who will lead the session, for a gentle run on campus. No experience required and jogging/walk-running welcome! 

Meet at the Sport Centre reception at 3pm for a gentle 30-minute session that is social, rather than focusing on running times or speeds. Our Active US running sessions are every week in term time.

This event is free and open to all on campus, no need to book - just turn up in running clothes and trainers.

2.00-4.00pm - Crafternoon - Common Room, Falmer House

Come along to relax with a cup of tea and get stuck in to some crafts! We'll have colouring books, card making and other crafty bits and bobs. Feel free to bring along your own projcts too. The Tea and Talk volunteers will be on hand if you fancy a chat. No need to book - just come along!

A gentle yoga session at Yellowave Beach Sports venue near Brighton Marina. Take part in our relaxing yoga session overlooking the beach!

Open to all, you can book your space for only £1 using the online shop.

3.00-5.30pm – Collage Your PhD – Library Open Learning Space (ground floor)

Isolation is common among PGRs, but you are not alone. The PhD community is a ‘collage’ of unique individuals with different specialities and strengths, who together make a diverse whole. Join the Research Hive, in collaboration with Dr Sophie Valeix and the Doctoral School, to represent our PhD community at Sussex and make a giant, collaborative collage for the Library. Come on your own to make a quiet creation, or join together for a more social activity. This is an opportunity to connect, be creative and feel a sense of belonging.
