Accepted file types and sizes for Turnitin

An acceptable file for e-submission and e-feedback must follow the requirements on this page in order to load in Turnitin; which is the software used for providing feedback, marking and Similarity Reports.

File types

If your file has been saved in a file type that is not accepted for e-submission and e-feedback will need to use a word processing program to save the file as one of the accepted types. Rich Text Format and Plain Text file types are nearly universally available in word processing software.

The following file types can be used for e-submission via Turnitin:

  • Microsoft Word® (DOC and DOCX)
  • Portable Document Format (PDF)
  • Plain text (TXT)
  • Rich Text Format (RTF)
  • OpenDocument Text (ODT)
  • WordPerfect (WPD)

Submitting from Apple iWorks Pages

Please note that native file types from Apple iWorks Pages will not be accepted as a file for e-submission. If you're using this program then go to the 'File' menu, select 'Export' and then choose either the Microsoft Word document or PDF file options to save your iWorks Pages file as an acceptable format for Turnitin.

File sizes and requirements

Your document file must meet the following criteria in order to be accepted for e-submission via Turnitin.

  • Submitted files must not exceed 40 MB in size or 400 pages in length.
  • Files must contain at least 20 characters of formatted text.
  • Files that are password protected, encrypted, hidden, system files, macro enabled or 'read-only' cannot be uploaded to Turnitin.

Files of a larger size may be reduced in size by removal of non-text content.

Image types

Whilst you cannot upload an image file for e-submission, the following types of image can be inserted into a document for e-submission to be displayed and rendered in the Turnitin Document Viewer:

  • JPEG
  • GIF
  • PNG
  • TIFF
  • BMP
  • PICT

Graphs and tables

There is a known issue that Turnitin occasionally fails to display tables and graphs correctly within '.doc' files produced using Microsoft Word 2013 (and above). Please ensure that you save your document as a PDF file before submitting; if your document contains graphs or tables. It is also advisable to view your similarity report to ensure that Turnitin is able to display your document correctly.
