Between 1999 and 2002, SPRU researchers carried out two projects on cleaner technology transfer to China under the auspices of the China Council for International Co-operation on Environment and Development (CCICED), a high level international body which advises the Chinese Government on its environmental policies. SPRU has worked in close collaboration with the Guanghua School of Management at Beijing University.
Cleaner Coal Technology Transfer (1999-2000)
This initial phase of research was carried out in the period 1999-2000, examining in some detail the issues faced by foreign firms in transferring cleaner coal technology, knowledge and skills to China.
Project Outputs:
- Clean Coal Technology Acquisition: Present Situation, Obstacles, Opportunities and Strategies for China, for the Third Meeting of the Second Phase of CCICED, August 1999 (pdf, 349 kb)
- International Perspectives on Clean Coal Technology Transfer to China, Final Report to the Working Group on Trade and Environment, CCICED, August 2000 (pdf, 415 kb)
Technology Transfer to China's Western Provinces (2001-02) A further collaborative phase of work with Beijing University commenced in Spring 2001. This focuses on technology transfer to China's poorer Western provinces with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. A specific objective of the project is to explore the potential role of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) in facilitating this transfer. The SPRU component was funded by the UK Department for International Development.
