The panel explores dynamics of masculinity, marriage, and cross-gender relationships in contemporary Afghanistan and its diasporas. It seeks to illuminate how social, economic and government practices shape men's gendered options as suitors, grooms, husbands, care-providers and lovers. It examines how Afghan men negotiate material, cultural and emotional aspects of becoming and being married. It explores these concerns both within Afghanistan, and also in the context of the country’s diasporas, especially in the Eurasian arena. In particular, the panel will look at male elopement, discussing how it can be usefully theorized as a gender transgression and asking whether elopement is emerging as a counterhegemonic masculinity in some areas.
