de la Warr Pavilion, Bexhill-on-Sea:

building tour and lunch

Wednesday 2 June 2010

We now have a firm date for this event, first advertised in the last Newsletter.

·        Lunch is booked for 1.00pm in the first floor restaurant overlooking the sea, followed by a tour of the building.  The two-course lunch will include fish, meat and vegetarian options, all ingredients fresh and locally-sourced.

·        The cost of the lunch and tour is £20 per person.  If you would like to join the group, please send your name(s), email address or phone number and a cheque made out to S. Bullock (sue.bullock@hotmail.co.uk, 01273 682133, 104 Bonchurch Road, Brighton BN2 3PH) to reach her by Tuesday 18 May.  All bookings and final arrangements will be confirmed.

·        The tour will last approximately an hour.  There will also be an opportunity to visit the bookshop and exhibition galleries during our visit.  Exhibitions will include Modern Times: Responding to Chaos – drawings, prints and films selected by artist and film-maker Lutz Beckera new painting installation by Tony Bevan; and an installation of Anthony Gormley figures.

·        The de la Warr Pavilion is on the seafront at Bexhill-on-Sea, with a large car park adjoining and free parking on the seafront.

·        It may be possible to arrange lifts if car drivers would let Sue know when booking whether you are able offer seats and if so from where and for how many people.  Anyone who would like a lift, please contact her with your details and she will try to put you in touch with someone with a spare seat.

®           Theatre Trips           ®

Here are the latest suggestions for possible Suss-Ex theatre trips.  The plays are:

·        Oscar Wilde, Salome, directed by Jamie Lloyd for Headlong Theatre, June 15-19; tickets £19.

‘The brutal power of ancient myth collides with twentieth-century decadence in

Oscar Wilde’s dazzling verse tragedy… a vivid contemporary production of this

     rarely seen masterpiece.’

·        Jonathan Bate, Shakespeare: the man from Stratford, starring Simon Callow; July 13-17, tickets £26.

‘In a magical tour de force, Simon Callow… tracks down the real William Shake-

speare, bringing to life both the man and his unforgettable characters – lovers,

      kings, soldiers and clowns’.

·        Alan Ayckbourn, Bedroom Farce, produced by Peter Hall; July 26-31, tickets £20.

‘Ayckbourn’s ingenious comedy shines a  brilliant spotlight onto the trials and tribulations of suburban marriage.’ – ‘Reduces the audience to blissful tears of laughter’ (Telegraph)

We can usually get a group reduction on the price of tickets for the performances listed if at least ten people want to go, and it is that price which is quoted for Salome and Bedroom, but there are no reductions for Shakespeare - so for that tickets are more expensive, but there is no problem about numbers.  Dinner together beforehand, or after a matinee, will be booked at Carluccio’s for those who want it.

If you are interested, let Jennifer Platt know by May 18th (preferably by e mail to j.platt@sussex.ac.uk - or phone 01273 555025, post to Freeman Centre [n.b. no longer Arts D] on campus, or 98 Beaconsfield Villas, Brighton BN1 6HE).  A booking needs to be made promptly to ensure that tickets are available, and your money then has to be sent in time for the total bill to be paid in advance.  Please use the slips on the last page: just mark all days/times which would be OK, number those when you are free in order of preference, and indicate the number of tickets wanted and whether you would like to join dinner before (evening) or after (matinee).  You will be notified of the outcome very soon after May 18th.

Stephen Medcalf

The Spirit of England: Selected Essays of Stephen Medcalf, edited by Brian Cummings and Gabriel Josipovici, will be launched at 3pm on Saturday May 15th in the Meeting House.  All are welcome.

The book includes essays on topics from Virgil and the Bible to P. G. Wodehouse and John Betjeman, as well as Stephen’s piece on finding a baby in a telephone box.

_ S                 Campus nature walk         S _

David Harper and David Streeter will lead a campus nature walk on Tuesday 25 May.  Readers of their Bulletin column will know that the campus has a considerable range of items of interest, even in such apparently improbable areas as the car parks.

The walk will start at 16.00 from outside the John Maynard Smith [Biology] lecture theatre - map reference TQ 347108!.    (By about 18.00 the group should have reached the Swan, so any late-comers could make their way there.)

It would be useful if those coming could let Ken Wheeler know in advance: kenneth.wheeler@ukonline.co.uk, Tel. 01273 478426, 22 Cranedown, Lewes
