Training

To ensure that you get the most from your research project, there is a set of in-depth training classes, which all JRAs should attend.

Please find details of the JRA Training sessions below.  All sessions will be held on a hybrid basis and the Zoom links, materials and class recordings will be shared on the JRA Canvas site.  If you have any problems accessing the site, then please get in touch at: undergraduate-research@sussex.ac.uk

Welcome Week - Introductory Audio Podcast
An introductory podcast to help you to:
  • Define your research goals
  • Manage your progress
  • Articulate your achievements
As well as providing you with brief case studies of previous successful JRA projects

Week 1 - Strategy: Planning and Structuring your JRA Project
An introductory session to help you to:
  • Define your research goals
  • Manage your progress
  • Articulate your achievements
As well as providing you with brief case studies of previous projects and some useful tools (online and on paper) to help you to successfully complete your research project.

Week 2 - Critical Thinking, Note-making, and Active Reading

 An overarching session to assist you with the research aspect of your project, which covers:

  • Critical thinking skills and examples
  • Note-making concepts and tools
  • Active reading: how to focus and pay attention to what matters (in a realistic time frame)

Week 3 - Academic Writing and Editing (Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities)

An academic writing session specifically designed for those conducting a project in Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities, with a focus on:

  • General academic writing skills
  • Subject specific writing skills for your subject area and examples
  • Editing checklist (5-stage method)

An academic writing session specifically designed for those conducting a project in Natural and Physical Sciences, with a focus on:

  • General academic writing skills
  • Subject specific writing skills for your subject area and examples

  • Analysis of previous posters in relevant fields
