International Student Summer Research Placements

The Doctoral School are delighted to offer online undergraduate summer research projects to international students wishing to study with us at Sussex.

Details of the 2022 international student placements will be added in due course.

Structure

Each non-credit bearing course runs for eight weeks, from mid-June to mid-August, and includes:

  1. Supervision from a dedicated Sussex academic for the entirety of the project.
  2. Not available for 2021 En-suite accommodation, with social space and fully-equipped kitchen, in an apartment shared with five other students.
  3. Six training workshops: Introduction to academic research skills, Effective literature searching for researchers, Introduction to managing research data, How to produce an academic poster, Introduction to postgraduate study, Oral presentations workshop.
  4. A programme of social events.

Eligibility

In order to be considered for an International JRA project, students should meet the following criteria: 

  1. Where applicable, English language requirement of IELTS 6.5 overall, with not less than 6.0 in each section or equivalent qualification.
  2. Be in the middle year(s) of academic study.
  3. A GPA of 3.0 or equivalent in year 1 of study.
  4. A demonstrable interest in a research career.
  5. Any research project pre-requisites, as detailed in the project outline descriptions provided by Sussex. Students may also be required to have a Skype interview with their supervisor to discuss their suitability for the research project.

Students may be required to apply for a short-term study visa for entry to the UK. Further information can be found on our Sussex International Student Support webpages.

  1. CV
  2. Personal statement
  3. English language qualification (where applicable)
  4. Academic transcript
  5. Brief examples of written work (ideally project report)
  6. Statement of future career interests.

Cost

The cost of a placement for 2020 was £2,900 per student (around $4,155 US Dollars).
