JRA Application Pack
***PLEASE NOTE: The application form has now moved to an online submission process. There is an application form for Sussex students and a separate application form for BSMS students. Ensure you complete the correct forms from the links below.***
Due to industrial action taking place in the lead up to the JRA application submission date of 27 March, we advise you to speak to your supervisor and academic referee as soon as possible so you can submit your JRA application. If there is a delay with the reference or statement these can be followed up after the deadline once your application is submitted.
Ensure that you have read the JRA Terms and Conditions 2023 [DOCX 182.99KB], the selection criteria [XLSX, 13KB] and the guidance for applicants on these webpages carefully before you apply.
A complete JRA application consists of the following four documents:
- A completed Sussex Junior Research Associate Scheme 2023 Application Form which will include your research proposal along with a research summary, your motivation for undertaking a JRA project, and an optional Widening Participation Statement.
OR - A completed BSMS Junior Research Associate Scheme 2023 Application Form which will include your research proposal along with a research summary, your motivations for undertaking a JRA project and an optional Widening Participation Statement.
- A JRA Supervisor Statement 2023 [DOCX 26.46KB] to be completed by your potential supervisor. If your supervisor does not want to disclose their statement it can be sent directly to undergraduate-research@sussex.ac.uk.
- A JRA Academic Reference 2023 [DOCX 17.64KB] to be completed by an academic (not necessarily your potential supervisor) who knows you well and is able to comment on your previous academic performance. If your referee does not want to disclose their letter it can be sent directly to undergraduate-research@sussex.ac.uk.
- Your current academic CV, to be no more than two A4 pages in length, focusing on academic experience and including all modules and grades.

The application form is now available to submit online. You can download the Supervisor Statement and Academic Reference forms by clicking on the hyperlinks above. We will not review applications until after the deadline so there is no need to rush it!
If you are from an underrepresented student group or have faced barriers to a positive student experience, the optional Widening Participation Statement on the application form is a space for you to detail any challenges you have overcome and provide additional information in support of your application. It is entirely optional, but if you feel it applies to you then please fill it in. It will be considered by assessors when your application is reviewed.
Once completed, submit all four documents through the online portal. If your supervisor or referee are submitting their forms to us directly please let us know by email undergraduate-research@sussex.ac.uk
Applications are open from 13 February and the deadline for submission is 17.00 on Monday 27 March 2023. Applications that arrive after this deadline will not be considered.
Students will be notified of the outcome of their application in mid-May.
