Care leavers at Sussex

Our support for young people who are leaving the care system and starting a degree at the University of Sussex is changing slightly for anyone applying for a 2012 start.

The package of support will now include:

  • The Care Leavers Coordinator (Head of Widening Participation) as a point of contact
  • Automatic invitation to be considered for the additional support package, as a result of the care leavers question on UCAS form
  • Special consideration by admissions staff, plus Helpline for Results Day
  • A Care Leavers' Bursary of £3000 cash for every year of study
  • £500 study grant in the first year
  • Priority for the Access to Learning Fund (ALF) in the event of any financial difficulties
  • Permission to remain in a campus-based Hall of Residence, including all holidays (except for the last 2 weeks of the Summer vacation) throughout your degree, should you wish
  • A named Care Leaver’s Student Advisor, based in the Student Life Centre, available throughout the degree course to help with any problems or personal needs on a one-to-one basis
  • Individual support through a named Careers Adviser in the Careers & Employability Centre (CEC) from application until three years after graduation
  • Funded placements to help students gain work experience
