Foundation courses

International Foundation Year (IFY)

If you do not meet the University’s general entrance requirements, we offer a range of foundation years aimed specifically at non-EU students. Based in the on-campus International Study Centre, the IFY courses are grouped into six broad subject streams. You apply to do a particular stream and nominate the degree you intend to progress to. You can change your mind during your Foundation Year but both your stream and nominated degree are subject to availability. Tutors will provide you with information and advice about your degree choice and the application process. Provided you obtain the required grades at the end of your year and at the end of every term, you will progress to your Sussex degree in the following September.

IFY streamsSubject areas from which you may choose your degree
Business, management and economics Business and management studies ▪ economics

Applications must specify the intended degree and should be made to the International Admissions Centre (refer to Further information, below).

You will need at least IELTS 5.0 with 5.0 in Writing (or equivalent) to start on our IFY. If your IELTS result is lower, you can join our English language preparation courses before you start – for one term if you have IELTS 4.0 or two terms if you have IELTS 3.5.

International Year One

The International Year One is designed for students from outside the EU who have obtained good high school grades plus up to one year of further study. It is offered over three terms and comprises academic and English language courses. On successful completion, you enter Year 2 of an undergraduate degree at Sussex.

The International Year One is grouped into four broad subject streams: business and management (subject to re-validation) • computing • international relations and international development • media, journalism and film studies.

For our International Year One, you will need an IELTS score of 5.5 with at least 5.5 in all components (or equivalent) for business and management and IELTS 5.5 with at least 5.5 in Writing (or equivalent) for all other subject streams. If your IELTS result is lower, you can join our English language preparation courses before you start – for one term if you have IELTS 4.5 or for two terms if you have IELTS 3.5.
