Foundation programmes

International Foundation Year (IFY)

If you do not meet the University’s general entrance requirements, we offer a range of foundation years aimed specifically at non-EU students. Based in the on-campus International Study Centre, the IFY courses are grouped into six broad subject streams. You apply to follow a particular stream in line with your intended area of undergraduate study, and select your actual degree during your foundation year. Tutors will provide you with information and advice about your degree choice and the application process. Provided you obtain the required grades at the end of your year, you will progress to your Sussex degree course in the following September.

International Year 1 Diploma

The International Year 1 Diploma is designed for students from outside the EU who have obtained good high school grades plus up to one year of further study. It is offered over three terms and comprises academic and English language courses. On successful completion, you enter Year 2 of an undergraduate degree at Sussex. The International Year 1 Diploma is grouped into four broad subject streams:

  • business and management
  • computing
  • international relations and international development
  • media, journalism and film studies.

For our International Year 1 Diploma, you will need an IELTS score of 5.5 or equivalent. If you have a lower level of English, you can take one or two terms of English language preparation before starting the International Year 1 Diploma.
