An upper second-class undergraduate honours degree in any relevant social science, but applicants from other backgrounds may be considered. Applicants should submit an outline (two to three pages) of their research interests.

Programme description

This programme is designed for those who wish to gain a thorough grounding in research methodology, as a prelude to conducting independent research in international relations and politics. It covers the philosophical underpinnings of research, research design, research ethics, and both quantitative and qualitative methods. In addition, a year-long research elective provides an individually tailored programme of research supervision that is specific to your area of research interest.

This MSc is fully recognised by the UK’s Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) as a core grounding for doctoral study in international relations and politics.
