Information technology will play an important part in your postgraduate studies, and IT Services are on hand to provide the facilities you need to help make your time at Sussex a success.

Computers at Sussex

There are over 900 PCs located in cluster rooms across campus that are available to all students. These all have a customised Windows 7 desktop with a full Microsoft Office suite, high-speed internet and access to laser printing in black and white or colour.

There are 30 iMacs located in IT Services and the Library, plus a number of assistive PCs for students with disabilities and additional learning needs.

Every student has a personal networked file storage quota that is backed up overnight and is accessible from all campus computers as well as remotely. In addition, a wide range of audiovisual and digital video equipment is available to students to enhance their work.

IT Services provide specialist services for projects needing high-capacity systems including a new high-performance computing environment. This is supported by a dedicated team who maintain the system and ca

n advise research teams on best practice.

Bring your own laptop, tablet or smartphone – our campus-wide WiFi network has recently been upgraded and enhanced to increase capacity. By taking advantage of the investment Sussex is making in online learning and online information and support, you will be able to prepare your work where and when you choose. If you live on campus, the residential network provides internet access in student bedrooms for both wired and WiFi connections.

Online resources

IT Services provide quick, reliable access to resources such as the Library catalogue and online journals, as well as a fast, high-capacity link to the internet.

Sussex Direct provides a secure personalised gateway to University information where you will be able to edit the data held about you. Postgraduates on taught degrees can view module information such as timetables and exam results.

Before starting your course, you are encouraged to use Sussex Direct to complete online registration.

Many of our tutors use our technology-enhanced learning platform, Study Direct. This is your online learning environment, enabling you to access learning materials to study even when you are away from campus

A number of our largest teaching rooms are equipped to enable digital lecture capture. This means that, when appropriate, your lectures may be made available as podcasts via Study Direct.

The University email service offers secure storage for important email communications and is accessible via the web so that you can easily access it whether on or off campus.

Help and advice

Our staff offer help and support via the web, by email and in person both in IT Services in Shawcross and in the Library. There is an extensive range of IT skills training courses including the opportunity to attend an induction explaining all the IT facilities specific to the University.

Jing's student perspective

Jing Zhao‘The University's advanced teaching facilities and Library and IT services are really enhancing my study experience here.

‘The Library has an excellent system to support borrowing, returning, renewing and requesting books online, and the self-service machines are really good.

‘The 24-hour access to the Library and IT Services computer clusters is very useful, making tasks such as printing, photocopying and scanning possible at any time. And no-one need worry about internet connections because there are good-quality wired and wireless networks provided across campus.

‘'If you do ever need any IT support, it's easy to get help and advice whether it's via email, phone, or the help desk. The professional staff are quick to help.

‘Sussex is also really supportive if you need access to specialist development software. For example, through my department (Informatics) I've been able to use NetBeans, 3DMax, Adobe Flash and CS5, to name but a few.

‘I'm so enjoying my time here – Sussex makes sure the study environment is very comfortable.’
