Timetabling commitments

The University can make some firm commitments to teaching on Wednesday which will assist in making members of sports teams available to play fixtures.

Wednesday Teaching (Sport and Societies)

  • Teaching for all undergraduate students will not be scheduled after 1pm on Wednesday with the following exceptions (Films - an alternative evening showing will be available)
  • Teaching for some postgraduate students will only be scheduled on Wednesday after 1pm if it cannot be accommodated during other parts of the week.
  • Timetablers should avoid, where possible, scheduling whole group events (i.e.: Lectures) on Wednesday between 12 noon and 1pm. The limited exceptions to this rule are likely to be large lecture theatres such as Chichester.
  • Timetablers should avoid where possible, scheduling whole group events (i.e.: Lectures) on Wednesdays before 12 - It is appreciated that this constraint will need to be not infrequently broken SO timetablers should attempt to schedule the short Lectures (1 hour only) on Wednesdays to minimise the amount of time students are tied into. (i.e.: try to avoid scheduling 2 hour or longer Lectures). This is to facilitate members of sports teams travelling to away fixtures. Lectures in many of the lecture theatres are recorded on Echo 360 and made available for download.
  • Where small group teaching events (e.g.: seminars) are scheduled on Wednesdays any students involved in representing the University's sports teams should be be able to swap to another group subject to the availability of space in other groups. This possibility will be advertised to students; e.g.: via Sussex Direct

Religious Observance

  • To enable students to observe their religious commitments the University will not timetable into the 1pm-2pm teaching slot on Friday with the following caveat; If the timetabler has a particularly difficult scheduling problem which can be resolved by using this slot.
  • Tutors will be otherwise encouraged to be sympathetic to student requests. eg: to change seminar groups, for reasons of religious observance.

Rogue Bookings

If notified of an activity which is scheduled contrary to the terms stated above, timetablers will seek to address the issue as soon as possible.
