FAQ
This page provides answers to common questions you might have about your university ID card, and also provides guidance on what action to take if you require a new card.
- What does my card do?
-
Your ID card combines three functions. Firstly, it is a University Registration card that proves you are an enrolled student of the University. Members of university staff may ask to see your card to identify you as a student, and you must carry your card when you are going to sit an unseen examination. Secondly, it is a Library Borrowers card, and must be used when you want to access the Library. Thirdly, it is a membership card of the University of Sussex Students' Union (USSU). This entitles you to use Union facilities and enjoy the privileges and discounts available to Union members.
- What happens if I lose my card?
-
If you lose your card, or if you suspect it has been stolen, you should immediately report the loss to the Library (library.membership@susx.ac.uk). The Library will prevent your card being used by anyone else, but you are responsible for any borrowings undertaken up to the time when the card is reported lost.
To obtain a replacement card, which you will need to do if you want to benefit from University services, you must go to the Print and Reprographic Unit in the Hastings Building (ext 8216). There is a charge for cards replaced as a result of loss, or because of accidental damage. If your card has been stolen and you can provide a Crime Reference number from the police in support of this, you will not be charged for a new card.
- What happens if I change my programme of study?
-
If you transfer onto a new programme of study within your current School or GRC, and with no implications for the date at which you finish your programme, there is no need to change your Card.
If you transfer into a new School or GRC, but your end date remains the same, you do not need to obtain a replacement card.
If you transfer to a new programme with a different end date, you should obtain a new card from the Print and Reprographic Unit in the Hastings Building (ext 8216). There will be no charge for this replacement card.
- What happens if I intermit?
-
If you temporarily withdraw from your programme (intermit) you should retain your ID card. You can use it to access the Library and other facilities whilst on intermission. When you return to take up your programme again you should obtain a replacement card, which shows your new end date. No charge will be made for this card.
Please note that in order to continue using University services whilst intermitting (such as the Library and Computing Service), you must inform the relevant service provider of your status. This means, for example, that you must go to Membership Services at the Library to explain you are in intermission, and they will 're-activate' your Library account.
- What happens if I permanently withdraw?
-
If you leave your programme permanently you must hand in your card as you will no longer be a member of the University. You should hand your card in to the Undergraduate Office, Postgraduate Office, or Centre for Community Engagement, as appropriate. You must surrender your card in this circumstance, and you should also note that your Library and Computing Services accounts will be automatically closed.
