New link road to open mid December

A new campus link road along the southern edge of Stanmer Park is to open in mid December, giving drivers a new way on to campus and providing a second exit route off campus.
The road was due to open on Monday 13 December, but unforeseen delays caused by snowfalls and freezing temperatures in early December could cause this date to be postponed for a few days.
A new junction - controlled by traffic lights and served by a puffin crossing - will also open, where the road joins the A270 Lewes Road from Brighton.
Motorists travelling from Brighton on the A270 will be able to come on to campus via the new junction and link road.
Drivers travelling from the west on the A27 bypass will enter campus at Knights Gate Road, because, from 4 January 2011, the existing Falmer House Road entrance on to campus from the A27 will be closed except for emergency access.
Motorists leaving campus will have a choice of two exits: via the new link road, or via Knights Gate Road at the top of campus.
- Drivers leaving via the link road will be able to go either into Brighton on the A270 or east towards Lewes on the A27.
- Those leaving campus via Knights Gate Road and heading into Brighton will join the A270 via a new single-lane southbound flyover bridge, which has also been constructed as part of the new road scheme.
Once the new link road is open, all buses will enter campus via the link road and exit campus via Knights Gate Road. They will stop at a new bus stop in Sportcentre Road, which has been erected to replace the existing stop in Falmer House Road.
Cyclists from Brighton entering and exiting campus are encouraged not to use the link road, but to continue using the existing marked path that joins the campus at the pedestrian crossing near Falmer House.
Likewise, this path will also continue to be the route on and off campus for pedestrians from Brighton. The link road is not designed for pedestrian use and therefore has no pavement.
The infrastructure improvements are a condition of the planning permission for Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club's stadium development at Falmer and will enable the opening of the stadium in time for the start of the 2011-12 season.
Although the football club paid for Sportcentre Road to be upgraded, the remainder of the roadworks were funded by a £5 million grant from the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA).
