The University expects to operate as normal on Monday (25 March), when students occupying space in the Conference Centre have advertised a “national demo” for 1pm.
Although it is not possible to predict accurately the numbers of outside demonstrators who might come to campus, University staff have been assessing the likely impact that the protest might have on the normal, safe operation of the campus and have been liaising with the Students’ Union and the police.
The University’s main concern is to ensure the safety and well being of the thousands of students, staff and visitors who will be going about their normal business on campus.
The University is planning that campus services, teaching and research should by and large be able to continue to run as normal. If any services are disrupted on the day, campus users will be notified as necessary.
John Duffy, Registrar & Secretary, said: “The students who have announced that there will be some sort of ‘national demo’ at Sussex - and invited people from outside the University to attend - have done so without liaising with the University or with the local police.
“They have not talked to us about any of the practical arrangements which those organising any protest event in a public space would undertake, for example risk assessments, health and safety arrangements or stewarding plans. The University does not condone the attempt to exploit the campus in this way.
“We want any demonstration to pass off peacefully and with minimal disruption.”
