University of Sussex appoints top transformation executive as new Director of IT Services

The University of Sussex has appointed a renowned transformation leader as the new Director of IT Services.

Jason Oliver, will join the University in mid-September from the Science Museum Group, where he has been the Director of ICT for the past three years.

With an IT career spanning nearly 20 years, Jason will now head up the task of overseeing the University’s new IT and Digital strategy. He was recently named one of CIO’s top 100, which celebrates the UK’s most transformative and disruptive technology leaders.

After beginning his career at Sky and the Home Office, Jason became the Chief Information Officer at the Thurrock Thames Gateway Development Corporation where he built an award-winning ICT department. He then joined the Royal Opera House, where he delivered their biggest ever digital modernisation programme.

More recently at the Science Museum Group, Jason transformed the way its five national museums digitally engage with their audiences and was noted for “pushing technological boundaries within the tourism sector”.

Dr Tim Westlake, the University of Sussex’s Chief Operating Officer, said: “I am delighted to appoint Jason as Director of IT Services. He brings with him a wealth of experience in leading teams to deliver outstanding digital and IT transformation projects.

“Our IT Services are key to delivering our new strategy and ensuring that Sussex is a university of the future. Jason has shown he is an innovative leader in his field and will help us achieve a world class service for our students, staff and academic community.”

Jason, who is also a Fellow of the British Computer Society, an Independent Member on Thurrock Borough Council's Standards and Audit Committee and a Primary School Governor, said: “I am hugely looking forward to joining Sussex and the IT Services Team at such an exciting time.

“With the launch of the University’s new vision, we have an opportunity through digital technology to deliver an innovative service, which not only supports everyone working on our campus and beyond, but also paves the way for Sussex to become IT leaders within the higher education sector.”

Jason will take over the position from Julia Darnell, who has been the Interim Director and will return to her substantive role in ITS from 1 October.
