Induction for new students - Starting with us

The Students' Union

The Students’ Union aims to make student life better. From the moment you arrive at the University of Sussex, the Students’ Union will kick-start your university life with a whole range of activities and events to help you settle in, make friends and have fun. They're also on hand to provide advice and support throughout your time at Sussex.

The Students’ Union is an independent organisation, democratically-run by students for students. They support an enormous range of sports clubs, societies, volunteering and media run by students. They also support students through problems and campaign on student issues.

Every year over 40 students are elected to lead the Students' Union and ensure that the student voice is heard throughout the University community. Membership of the Students' Union is free and all students are automatically members.

Find out more about Freshers' Week

During Freshers’ Week, the Students’ Union's Welcome Team volunteers will be on campus in red tops to help you settle in and make sure you don’t miss out on any of their Freshers' activities.

If you have any questions about the Students' Union Freshers' Week events you can email their Welcome Team -

Freshers' Week events

There will be lots of Freshers’ events to choose from, including alcohol-free events, family-friendly events and postgraduate events. To hear about their events first, subscribe to the Students' Union's Freshers' newsletter on their website.

Full details will be online from 10am Monday 18th August on the events web page, where you will also be able to buy tickets to events.

For all the latest information follow the #sussexfreshers hashtag on Twitter, join the only official University & Students' Union Facebook group, check out the freshers web page and follow the Union on Twitter and Facebook.

Make sure you also explore the Students' Union's venues on campus. Not only are they student-friendly places to hang out but all the profits are spent on students to pay for things like advice services and campaigns, as well as funding for sports clubs and other student activities.

East Slope Bar is the perfect place for a laid-back drink and bite to eat. During the day, their patio is a great place to watch the world go by between lectures.

Falmer Bar is in Falmer House right next to the Library and is a great place to grab hot meals and a coffee on campus.

The Falmer House common room is a relaxed space with comfortable couches, wireless internet and space to study or just chill out

The Globe is the Union's bar in central Brighton, just off the seafront. Pop in when you're in the city and try one of their great burgers.

Students' Union Shops

The Union Shop in Falmer House sells a wide range of food options, stationery and University of Sussex clothing.

The Students' Union also co-runs the Co-operative supermarket in Bramber House. Located in the heart of the student accommodation, this is the perfect place to stock up your kitchen cabinets with food, grab essentials like toothpaste and use the Post Office to post things home.

Buddy Scheme

The Students’ Union's Buddy Scheme pairs current Sussex students with new incoming students to help them interact and communicate during the transition into university life.
