Induction for new students - Starting with us

English Language and study skills support

If English is not your first language, and/or you are concerned about adapting to a new academic culture and learning style, you may be interested in registering for English language and study skills support.

This support is available free of charge to all full-time international/overseas students registered for a full degree at the University of Sussex (Visiting and Exchange students are not eligible).  Further details, including an enrolment form, are available from the Sussex Centre for Language Studies (SCLS).

For visiting and exchange students, the Sussex Centre for Language Studies runs a variety of modules throughout the year, which you can take before you start your academic modules.

SCLS runs full-time English modules throughout the autumn and spring terms, as well as during the summer months. You can enrol on these modules for academic credit. SCLS also provides part-time courses in English for Academic Purposes, covering topics such as academic writing and presenting seminar papers. These courses may also be taken for credits.

There are some very useful learning activities to help you prepare for study in the UK available online at the Prepare for Success website.

Prepare for Success is an interactive pre-arrival learning tool for international students who are getting ready to come to the UK to study.  These learning resources about different aspects of academic life in the UK help you to find out what British academic life is like and what kind of academic skills you need for effective study.

There is also invaluable information for students who are new to the University on the Skills Hub website. This includes information about teaching and learning styles, ways to improve your understanding, and assessment and grades at Sussex.
