This course is set at Level 6 in the national Framework for Higher Education Qualifications.

Course learning outcomes

1. In terms of use of the target language (QAA Benchmarks 7.11 and 7.16), the successful student will achieve at least level C1 (Effective Operational Proficiency) in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment, in both target languages.

2. S/he will be able to communicate effectively in speech, and with a good level of accuracy, in the target languages with competent speakers of those languages.

3. S/he will be able to communicate effectively in writing, and with a good level of accuracy, in the target languages with competent readers of those languages.

4. S/he will be able to mediate effectively in speech, almost instantaneously and with a satisfactory level of accuracy, between speakers of English and speakers of the target languages.

5. S/he will be able to mediate effectively in writing, under time constraint and with a satisfactory level of accuracy, between readers of English and readers of the target languages.

6. In terms of explicit knowledge of language (QAA Benchmarks 7.13 and 7.18), the successful student will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the syntax and lexis of the target language(s), and of their appropriate registers, notably in the production of written exercises and translations.

7. In terms of knowledge of thematic studies (QAA Benchmarks 7.14 and 7.19), the successful student will demonstrate sound knowledge and critical understanding of the modern and contemporary cultures and societies of the target languages, gained through the study of written texts and other cultural products in the target languages.

8. S/he will be able to evaluate critically selected aspects of the literature, culture, history, politics, or society of the countries of the target languages.

9. In terms of intercultural awareness, understanding and competence (QAA Benchmarks 7.12 and 7.17), the successful student will be able to demonstrate awareness and critical appreciation of one or more cultures and societies, other than their own.

10. In terms of generic skills (QAA Benchmarks 7.15 and 7.20), the successful student will be able to gather, process and critically evaluate information from a variety of paper, audio-visual and electronic sources.

11. S/he will be able to analyse rationally a variety of social, cultural and intellectual questions and communicate that analysis clearly and coherently.

12. S/he will be able to work as a self-reliant and self-aware autonomous learner.

About your joint honours course

Sussex has always promoted interdisciplinary study by encouraging students to combine different subjects and different approaches to learning. Joint-honours courses are an ideal option if you want to study more than one subject in depth. A key idea behind joint-honours is to experience the range of ways that different academic disciplines use to teach, learn and research. Those differences are stimulating and challenging, but they can also be confusing, so you will find some useful information below to help you get the most out of your course.
