Marketing

The Student Recruitment Services marketing team provides marketing intelligence, support and guidance to academic schools and departments to:

  • Support effective recruitment and meet recruitment targets
  • Provide market insights so that information can be effectively and appropriately targeted
  • Provide understanding of our competitors, and advice on how to compete
  • Provide understanding of likely markets for new programmes
  • Support new programme development with market intelligence
  • Recommend effective and cost effective marketing approaches

The marketing team is comprised of a head of marketing, three FTE marketing managers, a market research officer and a part time marketing co-ordinator, all of whom work closely with colleagues in Student Recruitment Services and with the Communications Division to provide schools and departments with a joined up approach to their marketing activities.

Focussing primarily on recruitment to undergraduate and postgraduate taught programmes, the team is able to offer support that ranges from the development of school level strategic marketing plans to the implementation of programme specific tactical campaigns. Central to the team's work is the development of an evidence based approach to ensure the efficacy of both the financial and human resources invested in marketing activities.

The type of activities that the marketing team is engaged with include:

Strategic support, for example:

  • market research and analysis
  • research to inform new programme development
  • competitor research and analysis
  • development of school, departmental and programme level marketing plans
  • school and department marketing options appraisals 
  • marketing activity evaluation

and tactical support, for example:

  • implementation of school, departmental and programme level marketing campaigns 
  • digital and print campaigns
  • key messaging
  • website analysis

Led by Katy Hiles, Head of Marketing, the team works across all of the university’s twelve schools as priorities dictate however as a guide, and to provide relevant points of contact, each member of the team is nominally assigned to Schools as follows:

  • Claire Clinton – Schools of Engineering and Design; Informatics; Life Sciences; Mathematical and Physical Sciences
  • John Haywood – Schools of English; Media, Film and Music; History, Art History and Philosophy
  • Nicola Miller – Schools of Business, Management and Economics; Global Studies; Law Politics and Sociology; Education and Social Work
  • Fiona Gardener – works across all schools on an individual project by project basis
  • Kelly Yip – Market Research Officer works across all schools focussing on new programme development
