International Office

The international team is responsible for developing and implementing the University's strategy for international partnerships, cooperation and student recruitment.

Sussex has managed to increase the number of international students joining us in every year since 2009/10.  Together with colleagues from academic schools and departments, we hope to accelerate this growth from the 2013 intake. 

The Sussex Abroad team - within the International Office - are responsible for incoming and outgoing international student mobility which is of increasing interest to UK students joining the University. In addition the team co-ordinate staff mobility through European Erasmus programmes where additional funding can be sourced to support activities.

Our marketing and recruitment staff manage the University’s profile and recruitment strategy in five regions:
-    East and Southeast Asia: covering China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Thailand and Malaysia
-    South Asia: covering India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka
-    Africa and Middle East: covering Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Saudi, Iraq, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain
-    Europe: covering Cyprus, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Kazakhstan, Norway, Russia, Spain, Switzerland and Turkey
-    Americas: covering USA, Canada, Mexico and Brazil

  • Mr Tosin Adebisi:  Senior International Officer for Africa & the Middle East and portfolio development
  • Ms Amanda Barton: Senior International Officer for Europe, Turkey and scholarship development
  • Ms Katie Floyd: Senior International Officer for East and South East Asia and customer relationship management
  • Mr Martin Hookham: Overall responsibility for the implementation of the university’s international recruitment strategy and management of the international recruitment and Sussex abroad teams
  • Ms Siobhan Marshall: International Officer for Korea, Japan, Thailand
  • Mr Brian McNamara: International Officer for Hong Kong, Malaysia and Taiwan
  • Mr Michael Naylor: International Officer for South Asia: Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka
  • Mr Guy Robson: International Officer for Africa & the Middle East
  • Mr John Sander: Senior International Officer for South Asia and digital initiatives
  • Ms Victoria Shaw: Asst. Head International Office (phased return from maternity leave from Jan 2013) partnerships
  • Mr Gareth Topp: Senior International Officer for the Americas and marketing materials

Overseas visits
We organise regular visits to the countries listed above to maintain and develop contacts and to promote the University at education fairs and via institutional visits, presentations and working with the University's partners. A list of our forthcoming visits is available online.

Representatives/agents
We work with a number of officially appointed representatives based overseas and in the UK who provide advice to applicants. A list of our overseas representatives is available online.

Contacts database
We maintain a database of British Council offices and key university, international school and government contacts. These organisations receive regular mailings of our promotional materials.
