Student Mentors 2011

Student Mentors are second and third year undergraduates and postgraduate students who have been trained to offer advice and support to other students.

There are mentors in all departments and schools throughout the university except for in Informatics where they run a Peer Assisted Learning scheme instead.

What do they do?

All mentors can offer advice and support to any student on a range of issues:

  • if you're feeling lost and unsure during the early months of university life
  • if you want to talk through how to manage your time or improve your study skills
  • if you have a concern and want to be referred to the appropriate source of support
  • if you need help finding your way around the library or any part of the Sussex website

Mentors:

  • run informal workshops on timely study issues such as seminar/presentation skills or the best way of revising for exams
  • can meet up with you on campus to discuss how they can help either after workshops or through individual arrangement
  • can advise you via email
  • can help run occasional department social events

Contact the Student Mentors  by group email sussexmentors@sussex.ac.uk or by the school/dept or individual email addresses shown on following pages.

See your department Study Direct pages and the S3 website  for workshops and events.

If you have a concern or query about the  Student Mentors then please contact M.C.Lowing@sussex.ac.uk

Any feedback on the service you receive from the Student Mentors in your school - be it positive or negative, can be given through the online survey at https://www.survey.bris.ac.uk/sussex/feedback/

In many circumstances it may be more appropriate to talk to a Student Life Advisor who will be able to help on all aspects of student support. They can be found at the Student Life Centre, Chichester 1 (01273) 876767 studentlifecentre@sussex.ac.uk

If you would like to apply to be a Student Mentor in the next academic year and you are either a current first year undergraduate or postgraduate student then please contact healthandwellbeing@sussex.ac.uk
