Staff Development at Sussex
Why staff development?
University of Sussex staff development exists to support the organisation and its staff to realise their full potential, and to contribute to the achievement of organisational, school/unit, team and individual goals and aspirations. However we need to be realistic about available resources and ensure we use these, in the main, to focus on staff development needs that are aligned to priorities which contribute to improved overall organisational performance.
Who is responsible?
The ultimate responsibility for ensuring continued learning and development at work lies with each member of staff. However, staff who manage others have the additional responsibility to plan, encourage and facilitate the relevant learning and development of the staff they are responsible for, and to evaluate its effectiveness; our Staff Appraisal Scheme gives an ideal backdrop to support that process.
Most schools/units also have a key member of staff with a staff development 'brief' across their school/unit. Contact the School Administrator or Division Director/Unit Head to find out who that person(s) might be.
In addition there are a number of units in the Professional Services who employ staff with responsibility for providing organisational/staff development at Sussex, including:
- General aspects of staff development policy and opportunity for all staff: the Staff Development Unit (part of the Human Resources Division)
- Development to support the strategic enhancement of learning, teaching and assessment including in-house teacher training programmes: The Teaching, Learning and Development Unit (part of the Academic Services Division)
- IT skills training: Information Technology Services
- Health and Safety training: Health, Safety and Environment Office
