Summer Graduation ceremony postponement

Today, Kelly Coate, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Education and Students wrote to all final year students to let them know that Graduation has been postponed due to the COVID-19 situation.  As changes to the current lockdown measures taken to safeguard the public from COVID-19 are yet to be confirmed, the postponement has been taken to protect the health and wellbeing of graduands, their guests, our staff and the wider community.

Responding to this development Kelly Coate said: “I know this news comes as a great disappointment to students and staff across the University.

“Sussex graduation is unique, it is the ceremony where the ‘Spirt of Sussex’ truly comes to life.  This ethos is expressed by every graduand who crosses the stage as they celebrate in their own diverse way – all with the hearty encouragement of our Chancellor, Sanjeev Bhaskar, who needs no persuasion to join them in a dance, high five, or a hug.”

The University is currently exploring alternate ways for graduands to celebrate remotely in July and further details will be shared in due course.

Once large public gatherings can be safely held, all Summer graduates will be invited to come together to celebrate their achievements in person with their families, loved ones and University staff.
