Update: Action short of a strike (ASOS)

Following discussions with a range of members of staff and UCU, the University has today written to all staff on grades 7-10 and Associated Tutors to provide an update on action short of a strike (ASOS) in relation to the current industrial action.

The email from Director of Human Resources, Sheila Gupta, is included below.

Update: Action short of a strike (ASOS)

To: staff on grades 7-10 and Associate Tutors

Dear colleague

I am writing to provide clarification in regards to action short of a strike (ASOS).

For background, UCU members agreed to take ASOS in the following ways:

  • work to contract
  • not cover for absent colleagues
  • not reschedule lectures or classes cancelled due to strike action
  • not undertake any voluntary activities

The University has been considering how to respond to UCU members and non-Union members taking ASOS. Pay will not be withheld for any ASOS. Colleagues will be advised in advance if this policy changes.

One of the principles the University adopted at the start of this dispute was that we would not let industrial action substantially disadvantage our students.

We have therefore asked everyone responsible for assessments to ensure that these only include material covered in classes. In order to put this principle into practice, we ask colleagues to make whatever adjustments are necessary to assessments, and to prioritise this work on non-strike days. Thank you.

Kind regards,

Sheila Gupta
Director of Human Resources
