Important parking information

For a period of a week and starting from today (18 December), a number of shrubs and trees will be removed around East Slope area and the Science car park (P1) as part of the ongoing work associated with our new residences and in preparation for our new Science building. This will involve clearance of low-level shrubbery, as well as around 100 larger trees.
The work has been approved by the necessary authorities as part of the planning approval process for our construction projects.
As a result of this work, the East Slope car park (P10), will be closed to vehicles.
To allow for safe working, the majority of the Science car park (P1) and part of Estates Road will also be closed to vehicles from today 18-23 December.
While considerable efforts have been made to mitigate any inconvenience caused, this work will significantly reduce the number of car parking spaces available during that week. Drivers should avoid the Science and East Slope car parks, and use alternatives such as Sport Centre (P5), Lewes Court (P9) and Park Village (P8).
Where possible during that week, staff and students are strongly encouraged to switch to other means of transport, such as cycling, or travelling to campus by bus or train.
During this time, access for emergency services, deliveries and refuse collection will be maintained, as will pedestrian routes.
Local exclusion zones will be set up temporarily in both areas, with some short-term footpath closures in place. Please take extra care in the vicinity of these works, and observe the temporary diversions and barriers.
All tree-felling will take place only between the hours of 8am and 6pm, and by conducting these works after teaching finishes for the Christmas break, the campus is expected to be quieter and disruption should be minimised.
Each tree identified for removal has been assessed by an arboriculturist, and as few as 15 are considered mature or having significant remaining life expectancy. None of the trees to be removed are subject to preservation orders. As part of the landscaping for both the East Slope and Science building developments, many new trees are due to be planted.
